apparently the band recorded over 20 songs for this record and had their fan club and focus groups pick the best ones and influence the final mix. the result has all the analog weirdness that got me into them in the first place (for the record, my favorite song is speed racer from their fifth album) … but it’s also kinda heavy and is by far their most dance-oriented material. total audio party. their live show has taken this turn as well - what i caught of them at coachella this year was all the awesome of when i’d seen them in 2004, but with what seemed to be a big influence from the faint. great videos synchronized to each song, used as a huge high-def backdrop. here’s one of them.
